Affiliate Marketing : Finding a Product to Promote

It has long been accepted that Affiliate Marketing is one of the easiest ways to get into making real money online. There are few affiliate programs that are easier than Clickbank. After signing up for a free affiliate account, there are thousands of products in their Marketplace waiting to be promoted. That said, there’s no guarantee you’ll make any money unless you go about it the right way. Signing up for an affiliate program and posting a link on a website isn’t going to work. There’s a lot more to it than that.

The first step in Affiliate Marketing is finding your niche. What field of interest are you going to concentrate on? You could choose products randomly from multiple niches but it’s a lot easier to stay focused on the task in hand if you stick to one niche to begin with.

Once you have chosen your niche, it’s time to find a product. If you look through the Clickbank Marketplace under the category and sub-categories that represent your niche, you can find more than enough products. The problem then is which one?

The Gravity of the Situation
Clickbank provide an indicator, called Gravity, which shows how well a product is selling. The algorithm for calculating Gravity is known only to Clickbank, but if it is a high number, it means that the product is selling, and has been sold recently.

I have read differing opinions on whether to choose high Gravity, low Gravity or extremely high Gravity products. Personally I think that if the Gravity is too low (below 50) it’s probably not worth looking at unless it has only just appeared in the Marketplace. Some people say that if the Gravity is above say 200, then there is too much competition for that product. In my opinion, competition is good, and if the Gravity is very high, it means that people are still buying it, so there’s probably still room for me to promote it.

Another thing to consider is how much money you will earn from a sale. If it is too low, consider whether it is worth the cost of promoting it. On the other hand, if it is selling like hot cakes then it could still bring in a lot of money.

So my rule of thumb is to choose a product with a Gravity higher than 100 (I might go as low as 80, depending on the niche), and that gives a reasonable return for each sale.

So with that in mind I hit the Clickbank Marketplace and I’m overwhelmed by the number of products to wade through, and it can take a long time to hit on the product to promote.

As a software developer I have often said “If you need to do something, do it. If you need to do it again, do it. If you need to do it a third time, write a program to do it!” So, I am now in the process of writing a program that will search for all Clickbank products within your chosen niche that match the criteria you specify (minimum Gravity, minimum earnings per sale etc).

I’ll be releasing the software for sale once it is fully tested and finished, and I’ll be offering a big discount to anyone who is on my mailing list who buys it within the first month after release. And anyone who subscribes before 1st October 2011 will be entered in a draw for a free copy.
